ABSTRACT
This paper addresses the practice of mysticism within Sufism and explores the extent to which this practice is deemed significant. It examines the historical background of Sufism and of mysticism within Sufism (this being grounded within Islam), together with the contemporary understanding of Sufism and its place in the modern world. The paper also provides a discussion relating to positive and negative reactions to the practice from the Muslim and non-Muslim world.
